Meeting Highlights: Basic Knitting for Crocheters

Several members brought completed backpacks but we still have a way to go before reaching our goal of twenty completed bags. When we reach our first goal, the bags will be delivered to the Harriet Tubman Center. The next twenty backpacks will go to People Serving People.
Maxine did her best to impart some basic knitting skills. She demonstrated different ways to cast on, as well as knit and purl stitches using the continental style. Continental works well for crocheters who are accustomed to tensioning yarn with their non-hook hand, as the knitter does not insert needle, stop and throw the yarn before pulling the yarn through the loop. There are many websites with videos explaining this style of knitting. Check out Knitting Help.

Show and tell included Carla’s ribbon-winning items from the State Fair and Wendy’s filigree baby blanket. Pictures of these items can be found in a separate post.

October is five-Saturday month. Our first 5th Saturday tour will be Saturday, 10/31/10 at Color Crossing, a yarn shop in Roberts, WI. We will gather at the shop around 12:30 PM. Full directions to the shop are posted on this blog.

For our November meeting, Gail will teach us how to crochet a beaded bracelet using the tunisian stitch.

Yes, someone actually finished her socks--and she won a ribbon at the state fair for them, too!  Way to go, Carla!

Basic Knitting for Crocheters: October 9 Meeting Preview

Our next meeting will be held Saturday, October 9 from 2:30 to 4:30 at Borealis Yarns, 1340 Thomas Avenue in St. Paul MN in the main conference room. We have a fun, full agenda and hope you can join us!
  • Maxine will teach some basic knitting skills from a crocheter's perspective. The list is flexible but topics so far are: Cast-on methods, knit and purl, making knit edges on crocheted items, choosing needle size, choosing knitting style (Continental vs. American picking vs. throwing). If you're interested in participating please bring the following items:
    • Worsted weight yarn
    • Pair of knitting needles (straight or circular), size 7 or 8
    • Optional (but really fun!). Crocheted squares or rectangles in the same yarn, to practice knit edges
  • Update on our community project - remember, our goal is 20 bags by the October meeting
  • Finalize plans for our the first "5th Saturday" field trip (Saturday, October 30, the fifth Saturday in October)
  • Share out latest projects
